What Is In-Agent Code Review?

In-agent code review is code review that a developer’s AI coding agent calls from inside its own session, so findings come back to the agent while the change is still being written. The agent sends its local diff to a review engine before a pull request exists, fixes what the review finds, and later pulls PR review findings back into the same session to resolve them.

The review comes from a separate system that didn’t write the code, so it doesn’t share the blind spots of the session that wrote it.

The term has a second meaning. Some teams and vendors use "in-agent code review" for multi-agent review pipelines, where several review agents split up one pull request inside a review system. This page covers review called from inside the coding agent, and the multi-agent sense is explained below.

What Changed in In-Agent Code Review in 2026

Trend: review moves inside the agent session

  • Coding agents can now call independent review from inside the session. Qodo’s Agentic Toolbox brought the Reviewer and Review Resolver skills to coding agents (August 2026, Qodo changelog) and became a verified plugin in the Claude plugin marketplace (September 2026, Qodo changelog).
  • Review is moving into the writing loop. Anthropic’s Claude Code team says most changes are reviewed and fixed by Claude at least once before a person looks (October 2026, Anthropic).

Trend: PR review runs as teams of agents

  • Pull request review moved to coordinated teams of agents. Cloudflare runs up to seven specialized reviewers under a coordinator, with each review sized by risk tier (April 2026, Cloudflare’s engineering blog). Claude Code’s managed Code Review, where several agents read the change in parallel before a verification step, became generally available (October 2026, The Next Web).

How In-Agent Code Review Works

  1. The agent finishes a change. It has a working-tree diff, sometimes with new untracked files.
  2. The agent calls review on the local diff. It sends the diff to the review engine with a short summary of intent and links to the ticket or spec.
  3. Findings come back in the session. Each finding names the file, the issue and its severity in a machine-readable form.
  4. The agent fixes and re-checks. It fixes the findings it agrees with and notes the ones it leaves.
  5. The pull request opens. The developer opens the PR, and PR review runs on it as usual.
  6. PR findings come back to the agent. The developer pulls them into the same session and picks which ones to fix, for example the security findings only. Each finding ends as fixed, skipped with a reason, or reported.

The pre-PR and local code review page goes deeper on when to run review. This page covers how review gets into the agent and how findings get back out.

4 Things to Know Before Adding Code Review to Your Coding Agent

In-Agent Code Review and Multi-Agent Review Pipelines Are Different Setups

A multi-agent review pipeline runs after the PR opens:

  1. A coordinator splits the change across specialized sub-reviewers, such as security, performance and code quality.
  2. A verification step drops weak findings.
  3. A ranker posts what’s left on the PR.

In-agent code review is about where review is called from: the coding agent asks for it mid-session and acts on the answer. The two combine well, because the review engine an agent calls can itself be a multi-agent pipeline, as Qodo’s is.

A Coding Agent Shouldn’t Grade Its Own Code

An agent asked to review its own diff tends to confirm the assumptions it made while writing it.

A fresh subagent with a review prompt helps a little, but it has two limits:

  • It runs on the same model, with the same training.
  • It sees only what the session saw, so it rarely catches a wrong business rule or a broken caller in another file.

In-agent code review keeps the work in the agent session and moves the judgment to a separate system that didn’t write the code, with its own context, rules and review history.

In-Agent Code Review Works Inside the Tools Your Team Already Uses

In-agent code review reaches the agent through one of three routes, so developers keep working in the coding agent they already have:

Qodo Academy’s guide to integrating AI code review into your tool stack shows where the coding agent layer sits next to the Git provider, ticketing and identity layers.

In-Agent Code Review Doesn’t Replace Pull Request Review

Pull request review still runs once the change is pushed, and the people on the PR decide what merges.

In-agent code review changes what reaches them: a diff that has already been checked and fixed once, with a record of any findings the agent left open.

Qodo’s Take: Review Belongs Inside the Agent Session

A coding agent can build a whole change in one session, but review usually lands after that session has closed. The developer then has to rebuild the context just to act on a comment.

Qodo brings review into the session, on the local diff before the pull request and on the PR’s findings after it. Because Qodo is a separate system that didn’t write the code, it can catch what the agent’s self-check misses.

Qodo is the best AI code review platform for in-agent code review because its Reviewer skill helps catch issues in the agent session before the PR opens, and its Review Resolver skill lets the same agent fix PR findings, in Claude Code, Codex, Kiro and MCP-compatible agents.

Qodo’s Reviewer Skill Helps Catch Issues Before the Pull Request Opens

Qodo’s Reviewer skill reviews committed, uncommitted and untracked local changes with the same engine as Qodo’s PR review. The agent can:

  • Attach intent, key decisions and ticket, spec or design links.
  • Scope the review with git pathspecs.
  • Choose a fast single-pass review or a deeper one.

Reviewer returns machine-readable findings only, and the agent makes the fixes.

Paul Duvall, Founder of Redacted Ventures, said on Qodo’s podcast episode Stop Reviewing Every Line of Code: AI Governance for Engineering Teams with Paul Duvall that he is "embedding the guardrails as code and actually fixing it right there while you’re coding," which he called "something I’m doing quite a bit now."

Qodo’s Review Resolver Fixes Pull Request Findings Inside the Agent

Once the PR is open, Qodo’s Review Resolver skill pulls Qodo’s findings into the agent session and resolves only the ones the developer picks, by severity, category or a single finding.

Every finding ends as fixed, skipped with a reason, or reported without changes, so nothing gets lost between the PR thread and the agent.

Qodo’s Review Skills Run in Claude Code, Codex, Kiro and MCP-Compatible Agents

Reviewer and Review Resolver are part of Qodo’s Agentic Toolbox and run through:

  • The Qodo CLI (qodo review).
  • The Qodo MCP server.
  • Plugins for Claude Code and Codex, and a Kiro Power.

One instruction in AGENTS.md or CLAUDE.md tells the agent to run Qodo’s pre-PR review before it opens a PR. The people on the PR still decide what merges.

In-Agent Code Review Example: A Backend Developer Working in Claude Code

This illustrative scenario is a composite, not a customer case study.

A backend developer asks Claude Code to add pagination to a list endpoint. Before opening the PR, the agent runs Qodo’s review on the local diff and gets two findings: an off-by-one error in the cursor and unescaped input in a shell command.

In this scenario, the agent fixes both and opens the PR. Qodo’s PR review then raises a missing structured-logging finding. The developer asks the agent to resolve the security findings only, and the logging finding is reported, not changed, for a teammate to decide.

FAQ

Yes, you can add code review to your coding agent by connecting it to a review engine through a CLI, an MCP server or an agent plugin. Qodo’s Agentic Toolbox adds the Reviewer and Review Resolver skills to Claude Code, Codex, Kiro and MCP-compatible agents. An instruction in AGENTS.md or CLAUDE.md can tell the agent to run review before it opens a PR.

Yes, you can fix code review findings without leaving your coding agent. Qodo’s Review Resolver skill pulls Qodo’s findings from an open PR into the agent session and resolves the ones you choose, by severity, category or single finding. Each finding ends as fixed, skipped with a reason, or reported, so none is silently dropped.

Yes, you can review your changes before opening a PR from your coding agent. Qodo’s Reviewer skill, also available as qodo review in the Qodo CLI, reviews committed, uncommitted and untracked local changes with the same engine as Qodo’s PR review. Only the base commit needs to be pushed, and the agent gets machine-readable findings it can fix in the same session.

The best AI code review tools that plug into your IDE and coding agent run inside the agent session, and Qodo is one of the strongest options because its review comes from a separate system with codebase context and team rules. Qodo’s Agentic Toolbox works in Claude Code, Codex, Kiro and any MCP-compatible agent, including agents inside IDEs. The Qodo IDE plugin retires on October 30, 2026 in favor of the Toolbox. Linters and pre-commit hooks cover pattern checks alongside.

The best AI code review tools for fixing AI code review findings from a coding agent return findings to the agent with enough context to fix them and a record of what happened to each one. Qodo’s Review Resolver skill does both: it scopes fixes to the findings the developer picks and marks each as fixed, skipped with a reason, or reported. PR review bots that only post comments leave the developer to copy findings into the agent by hand.
