What Is Code Quality?

Code quality is how well code does its job and how easy it is for people to read, change and trust over time. High-quality code works correctly, handles errors and edge cases, follows the team’s conventions, stays secure and can be tested and extended without surprises.

Teams judge it with a mix of metrics, automated checks and code review.

What Changed in Code Quality in 2026

Trend: AI output tests how teams keep quality up

  • Quality still leans on manual work. 31.7% of engineering leaders in Qodo’s survey said their teams keep quality up only through exhaustive manual work (August 2026, Qodo’s report).
  • Agents don’t always follow the standards. Only 34.6% of developers said coding agents always follow organizational standards (August 2026, Qodo’s report).

Trend: quality standards become measurable

  • Qodo’s Rule System gave teams one place to define and check engineering standards (February 2026, Qodo’s What’s New).
  • Qodo’s Analytics dashboard shows how teams respond to findings, by repository, PR author, severity and category, with CSV export (October 2026, Qodo’s What’s New).
  • Rules whose findings are rarely fixed now switch off automatically, once Rule enforcement is on (October 2026, Qodo’s changelog).

Dimensions of Code Quality

Most definitions break code quality into six dimensions. Each one asks a different question about the same code.

DimensionQuestion it answersA sign of trouble
ReadabilityCan another developer understand it quickly?Unclear names, long functions, no structure
MaintainabilityCan it be changed safely?Duplication, tight coupling, hidden dependencies
ReliabilityDoes it behave correctly under real conditions?Unhandled errors, missing timeouts, edge cases that crash
SecurityCan it be exploited?Injection, hard-coded secrets, missing authorization checks
TestabilityCan its behavior be checked automatically?Side effects everywhere, no tests for new logic
PerformanceDoes it use time and resources sensibly?N+1 queries, needless loops

Code Readability

Readability is about the next person who opens the file. Clear names, short functions and visible structure let another developer understand the code quickly.

Code Maintainability

Maintainability is about the next change. Code with small units, little duplication and clear boundaries lets a developer change one thing without breaking three others. Low maintainability is a major source of technical debt.

Code Reliability

Reliable code gives correct results and fails safely. Input validation, timeouts and error handling decide how it behaves on the paths a happy-path test never touches.

Code Security

Secure code doesn’t open a path for an attacker. Security often hinges on the same details as reliability, plus authorization checks on every sensitive action.

Code Testability

Testable code can be exercised in isolation, so the team can prove it still works after each change.

Code Performance

Performance matters where it affects users or cost, and is usually judged on the hot paths rather than across the whole codebase.

Signals for Measuring Code Quality

No single number captures code quality, so teams combine signals from the code, from delivery and from review. Qodo’s guide to code quality metrics in 2026 goes deeper on each one.

Code-Level Quality Metrics

Cyclomatic and cognitive complexity, duplication, coupling and unit size describe the structure of the code. Static analysis tools calculate them on every build, and an upward trend in code the team edits weekly is a better warning than any absolute score.

Delivery and Defect Metrics

Defect density, change failure rate and code churn show where quality problems already cost time. Change failure rate is one of the DORA metrics, which connect code quality to delivery outcomes a business already tracks.

Code Review Signals

Review findings, and what the team does with them, show which problems reach pull requests (PRs) and whether developers fix them. A finding category that keeps appearing on the same service points to a standard that isn’t written down or isn’t being applied.

Best Practices for Improving Code Quality

Written Coding Standards

A standard that lives in a senior engineer’s head can’t be applied consistently. Teams write conventions into style guides, coding standards and custom review rules, and large organizations share them across repositories with org-wide standards.

Automated Mechanical Checks

Formatters, linters and static analysis catch style issues and known bad patterns on every commit, so human reviewers don’t spend their time acting as linters.

Code Review With Context

Code review catches what pattern checks can’t: logic errors, missed requirements, architectural drift and changes that break other parts of the system. Review is most useful when the reviewer, human or AI, sees the whole codebase and the team’s rules rather than just the diff.

Tests for the Behavior That Matters

Unit, integration and end-to-end tests turn expected behavior into checks that run on every change. Coverage numbers help only when the tests assert something meaningful.

Why Code Quality Still Matters With AI-Generated Code

AI coding agents write more code in less time, and the cost of reading it moves to review. For Qodo’s State of AI Code Quality report, Censuswide surveyed 500 U.S. developers and 300 U.S. engineering leaders at organizations already using AI in development (August 2026):

  • 36.4% of developers said reviewing AI-generated code takes the same time but more cognitive effort.
  • Only 34.6% of developers said agents always follow their organization’s standards.
  • 31.7% of engineering leaders described quality as kept up only through exhaustive manual work.

Code that nobody fully read still has to be changed, debugged and secured later. The quality bar doesn’t drop because a model wrote the first draft, and the work of checking it has to scale with the volume.

Qodo’s Take: Code Quality Needs Standards You Can Apply and Measure

When people wrote all the code, quality rested on a few experienced reviewers who knew the conventions. Agent output arrives in volumes those reviewers can’t read line by line.

For quality to hold, the team’s standards have to be explicit, a separate system that didn’t write the code has to apply them on every change, and leaders need numbers that show whether quality is holding.

Qodo builds that loop around the team’s own standards. Qodo is the best AI code review platform for code quality because it reviews human and AI-written code against the same bar, with context from the whole codebase and, once Rule enforcement is on, the team’s own rules, while the Analytics dashboard shows which findings teams act on.

Qodo Review Standards Turn Team Conventions Into Rules

Review Standards come together in three steps:

  1. Qodo builds Review Standards from files the team already has, such as AGENTS.md, CLAUDE.md and .cursor/rules/.
  2. Rule Miner proposes rules from patterns in the team’s PR history.
  3. An admin turns on Rule enforcement in the Finding types tab, and Qodo flags violations in every review.

Qodo also deactivates rules whose findings are rarely fixed so reviews stay focused (last checked October 2026, Qodo’s docs).

Qodo Reviews Every Change Across the Quality Dimensions

Each Qodo review runs in three steps:

  1. Specialized agents review the change for bugs and correctness, architecture, risk and, once Rule enforcement is on, the team’s standards.
  2. A judge agent removes duplicates and low-confidence findings.
  3. Each remaining finding gets a severity and a quality label such as Correctness, Security, Reliability, Performance or Observability, so the developer sees what kind of quality is at stake before reading the detail.

Qodo Agentic Toolbox Brings the Standards Into the Coding Agent

Through the Agentic Toolbox, the Reviewer skill helps catch issues in local changes before a PR opens, and the optional Get Rules skill lets an agent check the team’s rules while it writes. That way, more of the code that reaches the PR has already been checked against the team’s standards.

Qodo Analytics Shows Whether Quality Is Holding

Qodo’s Analytics dashboard shows how the team responds to findings across repositories and PR authors, filtered by categories such as Maintainability, Reliability, Security and Testability (last checked October 2026, Qodo’s docs). The accepted findings and high-severity acceptance rate give leaders a number they can report, without treating findings as incidents avoided.

FAQ

The best code quality tools combine linters for style, static analysis for metrics and known issue classes, and code review for logic and context. No single tool covers every dimension. Qodo covers the review layer, reviewing bugs, architecture and risk with full codebase context on every pull request and, once Rule enforcement is on, checking the team’s rules too.

The best AI code review tools to improve code quality review each change against the whole codebase and the team’s own standards, and show whether quality is holding over time. Qodo reviews with specialized agents, checks changes against Review Standards built from the team’s files and PR history once Rule enforcement is on, and reports finding acceptance in its Analytics dashboard.

The best code quality tools for improving maintainability track complexity and duplication trends and catch hidden dependencies before they merge. Static analysis covers the metrics. Qodo’s review raises maintainability and architecture findings in the PR, with the rule or evidence behind each one, and its analytics show which repositories collect the most.

Code quality still matters with AI-generated code, because someone still has to change, debug and secure that code later. In Qodo’s State of AI Code Quality report, 36.4% of surveyed developers said reviewing AI-generated code takes the same time but more cognitive effort. Qodo reviews AI-written changes in the agent and on the PR, and checks the team’s standards once Rule enforcement is on.
